Ano Novo

A batucada with many breaks - at times we've had 17 breaks in this piece! "Ano Novo" = "New Year"; named for our gigs with Jesse Cook, New Year's Eve at the NAC, Ottawa. So we learned quite a few of these from Rick Lazar of the Samba Squad. Others are very traditional, stretching way back - e.g. at least to the 'Brasileiro" album by Sergio Mendes & Carlinhos Brown. And some breaks are our own invention.

The entradas, breaks and finishes are described individually with audio and/or video where possible, but the longer audio tracks and videos near the end also have a list of which breaks happen when.

Breaks currently not in the repertoire are at the foot of the page.

Breaks are signalled by hand, then usually either called in with a reqenique chamada, or by the apito.
There is usually a primeira pickup prior to the main pattern starting/re-starting.
